How to Convert PDFs to PDF/X or PDF/A with Acrobat 8?

After learning the basic knowledge of PDF/X and PDF/A, you may want to know how to convert the standard PDFs to PDF/X or PDF/A. Actually you can validate PDF content against PDF/X or PDF/A criteria and save a copy of the PDF as PDF/X or PDF/A with Adobe Acrobat/ Acrobat Distiller, provided it complies with the specified requirements. Then you can use it under certain circumstances. For example, an ICC profile that describes the destination device is required for PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3, and PDF/X-4 compliance. Then just learn the followings to learn how to finish it in Adobe Acrobat 8:


Step 1 Open your PDF with Acrobat 8

Step 2 Choose Advanced > Preflight... in the top menu
Then you can find the PDF/X and PDF/A icon at the lower left of the Preflight dialog box indicates the PDF/X or PDF/A status of the current document.

PDF/X buttons: (similar PDF/A buttons appear)
PDF/X buttons
A. Convert to PDF/X
B. Verify PDF/X
C. Not a valid PDF/X
D. Valid PDF/X
E. Remove PDF/X


Step 3 If the PDF/X or PDF/A icon at the lower left of the Preflight dialog box indicates that the PDF is not PDF/X- or PDF/A-compliant, do one of the following:
1. Click the icon next to the text Not a PDF/X file or Not a PDF/A file.
2. Choose Convert Current PDF To PDF/X (or PDF/A) from the Options menu.

a. Select a PDF/X or PDF/A standard.

b. Specify conversion options, and click OK.

3. Do one of the following, depending on the results of the conversion:

a. If the conversion succeeds, save the PDF. A green check mark appears in the Preflight dialog box.

b. If the conversion fails, view the results in the Results list, or click Report to see the results. A red X appears in the Preflight dialog box. When prompted, click OK to view the Preflight results.
